Granted I am a huge huge fan of vocalist Steve Overland and always keen to hear material from the vocalist I do feel a little disappointed by this new Shadowland album. Shadowland is of course the new band featuring the ex FM mega voice with Heartland/Ian Gillan guitarist Steve Morris, Thunder/Magnum drummer Harry James, and bassist Chris Childs (Thunder/Go West) released via the Escape label.
Overland can obviously sing the sock off a sheep and again does come up with sheer marvelous voice but the direction and maybe song make up are what disappoints somewhat. More a bluesy feel on the initial Morris/Overland collaborations don't quite hit the spot while the final three songs are written by Overland and FM man Pete Jupp and more so seem to hint at more satisfaction value especially Wild Waters and bonus track (? whatever that means - is there a version without this track?) If I Had Wings which is sensational!
While it might sound I long for FM waters to be revisited which could well be true as I did love FM my thoughts on this album are still left wanting. Maybe its the direction of the first 9 tracks that hasnt got me in. Must say I did adore the SO album released by Overland a few years ago and that again was different to FM so who knows. All up not sure if Shadowland have hit the mark song wise. The ingredients to the cake are now doubt there now to make it rise. 5 out of 10
